Why did I develop The Career Edit?
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
I realized this in January of 2009 after being downsized from my position as PR & Marketing Specialist for Zenith Swiss Watch, part of LVMH. As I joined the ranks of unemployed and the economy collapsed around me - I didn’t know where to start. And while I loved the brand I had been working for, I had started to wonder what it was all for.
As I set out on my nine month job hunt, the one thing I knew was that I wanted to work for a company that made something that made people happy. Something that people needed or an attainable luxury that would make their days a little happier. That’s how I fell in love with the design world.
I made this realization after a lot of introspection and questioning. Who was I really? What did I really enjoy doing? Why? What is important to me? What type of environment did I thrive in? When was I happy and when was I miserable?
Fast forward a few years, a couple of fortunate career moves, and another economic collapse.
As I have always been outspoken about my layoff being an incredible career pivot for me, friends started reaching out for advice when the pandemic downsizing began. How did I navigate through that time? How did I know where to go next? How did I make the moves I did?
More friends and then friends of friends got in touch - right as I was starting the Leadership Coaching & Organizational Performance program through Rutgers University and Heidrick & Struggles. Now that I had the structure and philosophy of coaching down, I realized that I could actually help people navigate through this challenging time.
And it starts with a question. Who are you - really. Tell me 20 Facts about yourself - personal, professional, whatever pops up. That’s where we start. Then using the framework of coaching, together we explore who you are professionally. What do you do and why? Where? What’s important to you? And what do you want to do moving forward. What do you want to keep, cut, and do more of?
That’s the Career Edit.
